Beginning Phonics
In this class, our young students will learn the basics of letter-sound knowledge is the foundation needed to build up reading and writing abilities. By breaking down words into sound, we give the students the opportunity and the ability to build their vocabulary and enhance their capability to use and sound out unfamiliar words in the future.-- an essential skill to any student as they climb the ladders of success in whatever they choose to do. Course Description
Students will explore letters and sounds in the English language. During each session, the students will become acquainted with new letters, sounds and basic sight words. Sessions will include: letter identification, phonics (sounds), manipulating letters to practice new sounds, reading basic sight words, and writing letters and/or words.
Course Objectives
Students will be able to:
Verbalize short sounds of letters
Manipulate letters to make new sounds
Read CVC word families
Read basic sight words
Use capital “I” in writing
Begin simple sentences with capital letters
Teacher Profile
Jenelle received her B.A. in Liberal Arts from California State University. She minored in English with a concentration in Spanish. Later, she received a Multiple Subject teaching credential and the equivalent Generalist certification. Additionally, she earned an ESL Supplemental certification and Bilingual Spanish Supplemental certification. She has also completed all Gifted & Talented requirements. In over 20 years as a teacher, she has taught 2 & 3 grades and Intervention for 1-3 grades. Most recently, Jenelle has served as a bilingual teacher. Since 2020, she has taught virtually. Jenelle loves developing relationships with her students and helping them develop confidence needed to succeed.

Attendance and Participation
Attendance and participation will benefit you in several ways. First, in-class activities and class discussions will help you refine your understanding of the topics covered in class. Second, being present and actively participating will help you internalize the content so that you are able to use it more fluently when it comes time for assessment and implementation (i.e., when you get in the classroom).
